Crabapples

Crabapples, are very durable, adaptable, and long-lived trees. They prefer full sun and perform well in average, well-drained soil. Even the most disease resistant varieties of crabapples will sometimes exhibit signs of cedar/apple rust, and/or scab fungus. These are leaf diseases that are most prevalent on newly-planted trees (especially within the first three years) and trees which are stressed from drought or improper site conditions. Avoid planting crabapples in the vicinity of native eastern red-cedar trees, as this will sometimes start the yearly cycle of the cedar/apple rust disease.Preventive disease control is sometimes a good idea. The use of liquid fungicide sprayed on foliage is highly recommended. Crabapple diseases are rarely life-threatening but can weaken the tree and predispose it to other problems. These diseases can easily be prevented but cannot be controlled after they are infected. Timing is crucial when spraying these fungicides. Immediately after the flower petals have fallen from the tree, thoroughly spray the foliage every 7-10 days, 4 to 5 applications are necessary to ensure total control.
